The appearance of any sign of secondary sexual development at an age more than two standard deviations below the mean is defined as sexual precocity. Using data available from Britain and the USA, it may be stated that eight years in girls and nine years in boys are the lower limits of normal onset of pubertal development. Thus, any child who experiences pubertal development before these ages is precocious (Fig. 13.29).
